Parks and Gardens

Victoria is renowned for the hundreds of parks and gardens around Melbourne and throughout the state.

The Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne is considered to be one of the most significant botanical gardens in Australia. Established in 1846, the Royal Botanic Gardens cover 36 hectares and is home to over 12,000 different species of plants. There are a number of other regional botanic gardens in Victoria.

The public gardens of the Dandenong Ranges are at their best in spring and autumn, but are well worth visiting at any time of the year. The National Rhododendron Gardens are abloom with rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, daffodils.

Birrarung Marr is Melbourne’s newest city parkland and its name is taken from the language of the indigenous Wurundjeri people – birrarung means ‘river of mists’ and marr is ‘side’. Situated between Federation Square and the sports precinct, the riverside park creates an almost continuous green belt of parkland around the city and its pathways and bike tracks link to existing city trails.

Wide open spaces and large sculptured terraces have been specially designed to host some of Melbourne's best events and festivals throughout the year. The tops of these terraces give way to spectacular views of the city, Southbank, Kings Domain and the Yarra River. There’s also a theatre-like space at the river's edge that easily accommodates large crowds.

Opposite the Victorian Arts Centre, the Queen Victoria Gardens is typified by flowering garden beds and manicured lawns. Flanking pathways, these beds of annuals and roses are well visited and are a favourite for wedding photographs. Another feature of the gardens is the large floral clock on St Kilda Road. Made with almost 7,000 flowers, the mechanism was presented to Melbourne by Swiss watchmakers in 1966.

Watching over the lily-covered pond is a memorial statue of Queen Victoria, just one of several contemporary and classical sculptures in the gardens.
