Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival showcases 50 days of premier world-class thoroughbred racing and a party atmosphere unmatched at any other Australian sporting event.
The Spring Racing Carnival is Australia’s largest sporting and social event, but it’s almost certainly bigger than you think. It incorporates 79 race meetings across the state, with more than 770,000 people attending the Spring Racing Carnival in 2006 and injecting over $525 million into the Victorian economy.
The Spring Racing Carnival puts Victoria on the international map with its high-quality racing and an influx of international competitors and visitors each year. World-class racing in the BMW Caulfield Cup at Caulfield, Tattersall’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington is complemented by many country racing events held in all corners of Victoria.
The country racing experience is truly unique, with each country club offering a race day different to the next, but they all bring the best out of each local community. The Spring Racing Carnival includes no less than 21 Country Cups, where the community comes to a standstill for a day of partying in Ararat, Avoca, Ballan, Ballarat, Benalla, Bendigo, Cranbourne, Donald, Dunkeld, Geelong, Horsham, Kyneton, Mansfield, Manangatang, Moe, Murtoa, Sale, Seymour, St. Arnaud, Werribee and Whycheproof.
While the undisputed heroes of the Carnival are the stars of the turf, the accompanying fashion frenzy that seizes Melbourne during spring is truly spectacular. Colts and fillies alike relish the opportunity to frock up in their finest at racecourses all over the state. The fact that race goers purchased a total of 304,478 fashion items valued at over $20 million shows that spring time is a chance to indulge.
There are also many other special attractions in Melbourne to keep you entertained while away from the track, such as a tribute to John Wren, one of Australian racing’s most influential figures, at Champions – Australian Racing Museum and Hall of Fame at Federation Square
Whether for you it’s the horses; the jockeys and trainers; the fashion, colour and glamour, or just a great day out, this year’s Spring Racing Carnival will be bigger and better than ever before.
The Spring Racing Carnival is officially launched in Melbourne on Wednesday 3 October and concludes at with the running of the James and Son Ballarat Cup on Wednesday 21 November 2008.
